Using A Surrogate Mother? What You Need to Know

Times have changed for good. Now, you can use someone else’s uterus to have your own baby. Although there might be a few legal requirements to be fulfilled, you can become parents. Let’s try to understand the process of surrogacy.

What is a surrogate mother?

The word surrogate literally means substitute. So, a surrogate is a woman who acts as a substitute and gets pregnant on someone else’s behalf to have their baby. Now, there are two types of surrogates: traditional and gestational. In traditional surrogacy, a woman uses her own egg and the father’s sperm, which is artificially inseminated, to carry the baby for you and your partner. Here, the surrogate is the biological mother of the baby. Whereas, in gestational surrogacy, the eggs gathered from the mother are fertilized using sperm from the father or a donor and the embryo is created. Using IVF technology or in-vitro fertilization method, this embryo is then placed in the uterus of the surrogate. So, even though the surrogate mother delivers the baby, she is just the birth mother and is not genetically linked to the baby.

Who generally uses surrogates?

  • A woman who may have had medical problems with her uterus.
  • A woman who had a hysterectomy that removed her uterus.
  • A condition that makes pregnancy impossible or risky for a woman, such as severe heart disease, multiple miscarriages etc.
  • A same-sex couple who deeply desire a baby.

Other than this, if you have been attempting to get pregnant but have failed over and over again, you can also opt for surrogacy.

How to find and choose a surrogate?

There can be two ways to find a surrogate mother if you intend to use surrogacy. A friend or relative may volunteer to be a surrogate for you or you may already have someone you know in mind. That is the easiest way and will eliminate the initial screening for family and background check. The other option is to find an agency, like us, who will help you throughout the process and find a perfect match, to begin with.

Surrogate-couple relationship

It is important that the surrogate mother and the couple have a healthy relationship for a smooth experience. Conversations and interactions between the two parties will be frequent during the process. In the initial stage, it can be very exciting for everyone but no one party can ignore the other eventually. It is basically a business transaction, but for quite a few it can be much more than that, all depending on the surrogate-couple relationship.

A positive experience

Finally, a positive experience is what everyone is looking for. A surrogate mother is looking for a happy and healthy delivery and the intended parents are looking for a happy and healthy surrogate. It is essential to understand that even though you may be desperate to have a baby, don’t settle on the very first surrogate that you find. Make sure to take professional advice before you make a decision.
